YouthBuild Boston (YBB) is an outstanding nationally-respected organization committed to empowering low-income youth. Founded in 1990 with the goal of providing underserved young people with the support and credentials needed to successfully enter the building trades, the new Director of Development will come into an organization with an extraordinary record of achievement in its 30-year history. YBB is a best-in-class leader in providing young people with fundamental opportunities for education and employment. With a budget of more than $2 million and approximately 20 employees, YBB has a diverse set of programs and income streams from grants, contracts, service fees, and revenue generated from its real estate holdings. 

OUR MISSION:

Our Mission is to empower and assist underserved young people from the Boston area with the essential social, vocational, academic, and life skills necessary to navigate a positive pathway to self-sufficiency and neighborhood responsibility. While YBB promotes the core values of youth development and community service, it stands out as an innovative non-profit offering a hands-on approach to building trades training. Our programs provide vocational education, counseling, and other life skills training that readily strengthen and prepare students for the workforce upon graduation. We focus on the assets of each individual to enable young people to navigate a pathway to a meaningful livelihood.  We connect young people to their peers, family, and community in a positive and supportive way.  Our programs include:

Building Trades Exploration: This 6-9 month academic and building trades program is for young people aged 17-24 who do not have a high school diploma. Participants gain exposure to construction and landscaping safety, tools, materials, techniques, and methods while taking HiSet prep classes for their high school equivalency test.

Pre-Apprentice: This 15-week program is for young people aged 18-25 who already have their high school diploma or equivalent and are interested in starting a career in the building trades. Students gain field experience on real construction sites to ensure that they are ready for employment in the field upon graduation.

The Designery: These 7 to 10-week sessions are geared toward high school students who want an enriching after-school experience. Students are paid a bi-weekly stipend while they hone fundamental graphic, modeling, and design-thinking skills through real design projects for non-profit clients around the city.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The H.E.D. Instructor is responsible for providing direction for academic instruction at YouthBuild Boston and working directly with students to teach, support, and inspire program participants to meet their educational goals.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Direct Instruction (22 hrs./wk.)

1. Create and teach detailed, engaging lessons in reading, writing and social studies (including civics, history and economics) in a remote or hybrid setting, as state and city rules demand, to prepare students to achieve passing scores on their HiSET Exams and earn the High School Equivalency Diploma.  When appropriate, include content pertaining to the building trades and/or service learning,

2. Utilize various teaching methods to develop/adapt curricula and activities to meet needs of students at various stages of academic and behavioral readiness.

3. Utilize computers/technology to enhance learning.

4. Develop and facilitate workshops for various Mental Toughness and Life Skills workshops with appropriate staff as necessary, particularly technology assessments, service learning, and the history of service and project management.

5. Lead planning for and, when possible, attend, field trips with students as appropriate.

Planning/Assessment (12 hrs./wk.)

6. Create, research and refine detailed lesson plans to teach social studies, reading and writing and respond to students’ unique learning styles and levels of progress.

7. Assess students’ proficiencies, identify gaps, measure progress and implement plans to address problem areas. Share written assessments with students monthly.

8. Participate in meetings with H.E.D. and Vocational Instructors and Case Managers to coordinate lesson plans and discuss student progress.

9. Participate in/contribute to systems for clear, concise and timely communication with case managers and construction team about program participants.

10. Attend and participate regularly in staff meetings, trainings, retreats and events.

11. Student Intake Process:  Set up and proctor TABE 11 & 12 Online pre- and posttests for BTE and PA students as needed

Evaluation (6 hrs./wk.)

12. Grade and evaluate student work material to measure benchmarking progress and readiness for Hi-SET test taking

13. Assess effectiveness and utilize assessment data to continually improve teaching and student outcomes.

14. Track students’ classroom attendance, test scores and grades and share written evaluations and assessments with team members and senior managers as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The ELA H.E.D. Instructor should have the vision, passion and maturity to ensure students experience a safe, welcoming and challenging academic environment that inspires them to achieve educational gains and proficiency.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required

  • 1 - 2 years’ teaching experience working with young people from diverse backgrounds

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Strong administrative and time management skills

Physical Work Environment:

  • The position will require moving around classroom, navigating desks and chairs, writing on white boards, manipulating a projector and screen as needed.

  • Candidate must be able to stand and sit for considerable amounts of time to teach, record grades, do computer work and make copies of lesson materials.

  • Must be able to bend to reach lower drawers and book shelves as well as reach up to higher book shelves and file cabinets.

  • Classrooms include two on the 2nd floor, as well as 1st floor computer lab and multi-purpose space and a 3 rd floor conference room.
