YouthBuild Boston Celebrates Two of our Recent Graduates

This week we're celebrating a huge accomplishment for two of our Building Trades Exploration students- Tyriq Lewis and Mike Murray. These two students have both recently passed their HiSET exams and will be graduating from the program this month.

Building Trades Exploration Student Mike Murray

The Building Trades Exploration Program at YouthBuild Boston is a unique opportunity for young people in Boston who are interested in pursuing a high school equivalency diploma in a hands-on learning environment. Alongside virtual and in-person HiSET prep classes, students receive instruction in rough carpentry, painting, landscaping, and facilities maintenance, all while earning a bi-weekly stipend. The program also includes weekly service learning opportunities, as well as job readiness, shadowing, and internship opportunities.

Many students who enroll are not aware of the amount of hard work and dedication it takes to complete the program.

They told me I needed to commit, so I had to change my mindset
— Tyriq Lewis, Building Trades Exploration Student

Students are expected to arrive on time every day, and put forth their best effort in the classroom or in the field, rain or shine. Each student knows that his or her classmates are depending on them to help complete the project in the best way possible. These projects, including landscaping and site improvements for our nonprofit neighbors and community partners, serve not only as the training grounds for the young people in our programs, but are also helping to improve our community. The impact that these students are making in the lives of others helps motivate them to keep going.

Students like Tyriq and Mike work hard for themselves, their families, and their communities for months on end, until they finally reach the finish line. Successful graduates like Tyrique and Mike are now able to pursue college opportunities, advanced training, or entry-level jobs in a variety of fields.

Congratulations Mike and Tyriq on a job well done. You have earned it! We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
