YouthBuild Boston Alumni Update: Ianee Gomes

This week we're highlighting Building Trades and Exploration Graduate Ianee Gomes! This amazing young woman is on the path to a career in Construction Administration.

We featured Ianee’s story in August of 2021 when she completed her HiSET exams and received her High School Equivalency Degree. Ianee first came to YouthBuild Boston in February of 2020 just weeks before the public health crisis that continues to plague our nation. YouthBuild Boston, like many other organizations, moved our programs to an online platform, which for many reasons did not work for Ianee and she ultimately withdrew from the program. Ianee later returned to to YouthBuild Boston and flourished working on a number of projects including The Harry Truman Apartments in Cambridge, the fence at Paige Academy, Digital Ready’s What Makes A Home Exhibit and a number of projects at Haley House Farm.

YouthBuild Boston really gives me the support I need and reassures me that as long as I’m focused I can do anything.
— Ianee Gomes, Statehouse Day 2021

Ianee’s Youth Build Boston’s story does not end with her completion of the program. YouthBuild Boston is dedicated to the success of every student we serve. Job placement and career development is a key element to the impact we have in strengthening our youth. Knowing that YouthBuild Boston would always be a resource for her, Ianee recently worked with Nathan Polk, Youth Build Boston’s Pre-Apprentice Manager, to discuss her future path and desire to establish a career in Construction Management.

Nathan quickly recognized the opportunity to create an Alumni Enrichment position at YouthBuild Boston and we are honored to have Ianee be the first graduate in this role. The Alumni Enrichment position provides a YouthBuild Boston graduate with the opportunity to benefit from the skillsets of YouthBuild Boston employees and learn about aspects of the industry that are not directly related to building and design. Our inaugural Alumni Enrichment position has been developed to help Ianee acquire skills for an entry-level position in an administrative role with a company within the field of Construction.

Ianee is now a full-time employee of YouthBuild Boston building skills and growing toward the professional we know she will become. She is learning about all aspects of administrative work such as mastering microsoft office suite and excel, scoping projects for various Youth Build Boston programs, helping to plan upcoming orientations for new student cohorts and managing calendars among many other tasks. Ianee will also gain experience managing various Memorandum of Understanding contracts YouthBuild Boston has with community and corporate partners.

We are honored to be part of this next chapter of development in Ianee’s life!
