A Day On, Not A Day Off

The pandemic, especially in our current political climate, has given rise to personal hardships such as isolation, unemployment, fear, and loss. These challenges are especially pronounced for low income families, immigrants, the aging population, and people of color.

This month on MLK Day, YouthBuild Boston students and staff gathered with volunteers from Starbucks for student introductions and community partner presentations, followed by reflection and discussion about what service means to us during the pandemic. Prior to the event, participants were asked to photograph the challenges they see being faced by their communities. Topics discussed included homelessness, food insecurity, violence, addiction, gentrification, and unemployment, among others.

We extend a special thank you to our friends at Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Dress for Success Boston, and the Grayken Center for Addiction at Boston Medical Center for their enlightening presentations and for the amazing work they’re doing in our community. We look forward to partnering with these organizations in the coming weeks as our students plan their next hands-on service activities.
